Running hot water down the drain will prevent grease from clogging pipes

Myth - The ground surrounding the pipe keeps the pipe cool, allowing the fat to solidify and cling to the wall of the pipe. When Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) enter the sewer system, the substances build up along the pipes, which can cause sewage backups and overflows, as well as extensive building and property damage. Large amounts of oil and grease in wastewater can also create significant problems for the City’s sanitary sewer collection system. FOG decreases pipe capacity, which requires extra cleaning. Pipes may also have to be replaced sooner than expected. FOG that isn’t deposited in the pipes will then make its way to the wastewater treatment plant, where it can only be removed manually. |
