U City High School Graphic Arts Students Give Rain Barrels a Makeover

Local real estate agent Randy Shasserre and the River des Peres Watershed Coalition have teamed with the University City High School Arts and Graphics Department to create “Rain Barrels as Art”.  Now you can help reduce your environmental footprint in style.

Students are helping generate a solution and gaining experience in a real-world client/consultant scenario.  Here's the problem.  People love that our rain barrels are functional and are reclaimed frRain Barrel Painting In Progress by U City HSom the local Coca Cola bottling plant.  However, some feel the light-colored barrels could be more visually pleasing.  Mr. Shasserre purchased 14 rain barrels from the coalition, and delivered them to graphics department director Todd Yancy in January.  Since then the students have been busy creating 14 uniquely themed designs ranging from Van Gogh influenced to Warhol.  Completed barrels will be displayed and sold at the U City in Bloom plant sale on April 28-29 (www.ucityinbloom.org).  Not only will the community have the chance to purchase a more visually pleasing rain barrel, but all proceeds will benefit the high school and the U City in Bloom organization.  Problem solved!

Below is a sneak peak of the completed barrels.   Thanks to the sponsorship of real estate agent Randy Shasserre, barrels will be sold at $99.
