The flooding in our watershed that resulted from Hurricane Ike left behind a mess. Part of that mess required professional clean-up that could only be provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
As a part of our clean-up efforts at Deer Creek after the flood, our volunteers noticed that there were several 55-gallon drums laying around. There were some at Deer Creek Park, some along the railroad tracks just north of Marshall Road, and many more downstream in the River des Peres.
Coalition volunteers searched for barrels by canoe and on foot. Locations were reported to EPA and DNR representatives who then recovered them. More than 30 barrels were recovered! Our thanks go to the volunteers as well as to the EPA and DNR staff who worked together to ensure that these potentially hazardous barrels were removed from our waterways!
